CONSORTIUM

The COLUMBUS Consortium is made up of 25 Partners across 14 countries and has been specifically designed to address the call topic and achieve the intended impacts. The Consortium is a balanced, multidisciplinary partnership, containing Pan-European organisations which represent a broad constituency of stakeholders in the marine and maritime areas.

COLUMBUS brings together a new extended multi-stakeholder, multidisciplinary, transnational partnership with the experience, strategic positioning and track record in the marine and maritime sectors to achieve the ambitious impacts of the call topic. Understanding that strategic changes are needed in how the marine and maritime community interact and collaborate for mutual benefit, the partnership has been constructed to represent all aspects of the research lifecycle (funding bodies, researchers, communications experts and end-users) and all regional sea basins in Europe.

Project Management Jülich

As one of Germany’s leading project management organisations Project Management Jülich is a partner for researchers, industry representatives and policy-makers. With their capacities in research and innovation management they help their contractors at federal, federal state level and in the European Commission to realise their research targets. Project Management Jülich is active in ten primary fields of work covering a diversity of thematic areas, these are : analysis of technological trends, development of funding concepts, technical and administrative implementation of funding programmes, control of supported projects, coordination of European projects, representation in international committees, consultation on national and European funding for research, science communications. Its division MGS (Marine Research, Geoscience, Ship and Marine Technology) in Rostock and Berlin is mandated to manage all federal research programmes related to marine and maritime research.

Role of PROJECT MANAGEMENT JÜLICH in COLUMBUS

Work Package Leader for Work Package 3 Knowledge Demand. Competence Node Leader for Marine Environment and Futures. Participating across project in Work Packages 2 to 6. Assisting in organisation of external training events in Work Package 2.

Profile of staff engaged in the project:

wolfDr Ulrich Wolf trained as physical oceanographer in Kiel and Oxford and received his PhD in 1990 at Hamburg University. His career started in 1986 at the Institute for Marine Research in Kiel working in various interdisciplinary projects including the JGOFS Core Project Office. As a senior scientist he moved to the Institute for Baltic Sea Research, Rostock, in 1995. During his career he participated in roughly 30 scientific cruises. He joined PtJ in 1997 and besides managing projects in marine and polar research he acted as the FP7 National Contact Point (NCP) for shipping and maritime technology. In 2001/02 he established and supervised the PtJ-MGS branch in Berlin. As project officer, partially as coordinator, he was involved in several ERA-NETs like MARTEC, BONUS and MarinERA. From 2005 to Sept 2011 he was seconded to UNESCO as a senior advisor to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and Head of the NEAMTWS Secretariat.

 

Foto CKCareen Krüger is a graduate geographer and studied at the University of Greifswald. She has project management experiences for years and can demonstrate excellent communication and organisational skills. She was involved in several projects related to regional development and has comprehensive knowledge in research funding programmes (EU-FP6, EU-FP7 and Structural Funds). Recently, Careen finished the project “European Coordination Office Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (EUKOS-MV)” on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Before she joined Project Management Jülich in 2007, she worked as project coordinator of the EU-FP6 ScanBalt Competence Region project on behalf of BioCon Valley, a regional network of life sciences and biotechnology in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern who is well connected to other networks in this field in the Baltic Sea Region.
